How Paper Is Recycled (And How You Can Do It At Home)

8th June 2022

With a growing awareness about environment sustainability among people and businesses, it has raised curiosity about recycled paper and printing too. Paper can be recycled 6-7 times. While finished recycled paper may vary drastically in quality and usability from one another, there are a few key steps that go into recycling paper that are universal and help us understand how it’s done.

They are as follows:

1. Waste Collection:

Everything starts with the careful disposal of rubbish. What types of paper can be recycled? Newspapers, magazines, printed paper, notebooks, flyers, envelopes, paper bags, tissues and napkins (only if clean), cards, etc. as long as they haven’t been treated with varnishes or plastic coatings, or come into contact with greasy substances.

2. Waste Sorting:

The material collected is examined and recyclable fibre is separated from everything else.

3. Pressing and Shredding:

Paper that has passed the first sorting is pressed and shredded.

4. De-inking:

Ink residues are removed. The de-inked paper is soaked in hot water to create a pulp.

5. The other contaminants are removed from the pulp.

6. To improve the paper’s strength and elasticity, the contact points between the cellulose fibres are reinforced.

7. The paper is then rolled into sheets of different thicknesses and formats with the help of a machine.

What Can You Make With Recycled Paper?

Recycled notebooks, copier paper, pencils, pens and journals - we make all sorts of products through recycled paper. When you consider that most of these items quickly end up in the bin, it becomes immediately clear how important it is to reduce and reuse. Our customers that print on our recycled paper do so because they have a green philosophy and want to share this with the world. We make sure to also not bleach paper so as to prevent wastage and contamination of water. Over time, our process has been perfected to the point where, in terms of performance, recycled paper is almost indistinguishable from regular paper that isn’t.

How You Can Recycle Paper:

Recycling can be done at home too! It is simple and does not need professional equipment. All you need is:

1. Paper to recycle.

2. Casserole dish/washing-up bowl.

3. A mesh or mosquito net.

Here’s how:

1. Gather all the used paper that you can find – keep in mind that the colour of the sheets that you’ll end up with will depend on that of the paper you are using to make it

2. Cut it into pieces : the smaller the better.

3. Put the pieces into boiling water and leave it for a few hours. Stir from time to time.

4. After soaking, put the mixture in a blender. Add some water and blend until you get a pulp with a mushy consistency.

5. Take a flat sheet of tightly woven mesh or mosquito net, and create a screen by placing pieces of wood around the edges – the size of the screen will determine the size of the final piece of recycled paper.

6. Place the paper pulp in a container with a wide bottom, such as a baking tray. Put the screen in the container, ensuring that it is completely covered. Lift it out. You should now have a thin layer of wet paper on the screen. Let the water drain off.

7. Turn out that layer of paper onto a pillowcase and stretch another pillowcase over it. Press it with a sponge to absorb the water. Then, remove the pillowcase and leave the sheet to dry. This may take a few hours.

8.  Once dry, peel it off the fabric: your sheet of paper is ready!
