How recycled paper can save the environment

23rd June 2022

Paper consumption around the world

Since the start of the digital era, it would have been a no-brainer to assume that the rise of the digital medium would eventually lower the consumption of paper due to the decline of the print medium. With more information than ever before being available digitally, humanity has to rely less on print and more on digital mediums to access information. The establishment of large and free Resources like Wikipedia has made it easier than ever before to gain in-depth information on a topic without having to visit a library, open a file, or buy a book.

Unfortunately, reality doesn’t align with an idealistic image of a world that relies less on paper and more on digital interfaces. Contrary to the common assumption, paper use has actually increased by 400% in the last 40 years! The difference is especially notable in the USA - where 5% of the world’s population accounts for nearly 40% of the world’s paper consumption.

Paper production around the world has exceeded more than 300 million metric tons. A big chunk of this increase in paper consumption can be attributed to the increase in popularity of e-commerce and the amount of packaging material required to safely ship online purchases.

Recycled paper in India

It is estimated that India’s paper consumption will cross 30 million tonnes annually by FY 2027. For a country that houses 15% of the world’s population, India only uses 5% of the total paper produced in the world.

Surprisingly, recycled paper mills in India rely on imports from ‘developed’ countries to meet their demands of raw materials to create recycled paper products. The biggest problem plaguing the recycled paper industry in India is the lack of an established waste management infrastructure that can efficiently segregate and collect waste paper.

Why should you switch to Recycled Paper?

Imagine India uses 30 million tons of paper in a year. 1 ton of recycled paper replacing virgin paper contributes to saving 17 trees from being felled. If even 1% India’s projected annual consumption of paper is replaced with recycled paper, it would amount to 51 Lakh or (5.1 million) trees from being felled. If 5% of all paper was replaced with recycled paper, it would amount to 25500000 or 20.5 million trees  being saved. Saving 20 million trees annually can have a tremendous impact on our carbon footprint since it is said that 15 trees are needed to be planted to offset a single person’s annual carbon emissions.
